Most AI video tools have something labelled free. They are not the same thing. Some give you a working product at a small volume. Some give you a watermarked demo. Some want a card before you see anything.
This page lists what each free tier actually includes, and where the limit is.
The free tiers, side by side
| Tool | Free tier | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| RealClips | 20 credits at signup | No card, no watermark, 1080 by 1920 |
| Synthesia | 500 credits a month | Output is watermarked |
| HeyGen | 3 videos a month | Up to 1 minute each |
| OpusClip | 60 credits a month | Needs video you already have |
| Fliki | 3 credits a month | 720p only |
| Higgsfield | Free tier available | Generation only, no script or captions |
| InVideo | Free tier available | Paid plans are per seat |
| VEED | Free tier available | Paid plans billed annually |
| Pictory | Trial only | Not a free tier |
The three catches to look for
A watermark
Synthesia's free plan gives a generous 500 credits a month, but the output carries a Synthesia watermark. That is fine for evaluating and useless for publishing. If you plan to post what you make while deciding, this is the first thing to check.
Resolution below what the platform wants
Fliki's free tier is 720p. Reels, Shorts and TikTok all prefer 1080 by 1920. The output is usable but it is not what you would publish, so the free tier is a preview of quality you have not actually seen.
A card up front
Pictory offers a trial rather than a free tier. Trials are reasonable, but a trial and a free tier answer different questions: one tells you whether you like the tool this week, the other tells you whether it fits your workflow over a month.
RealClips
20 credits at signup, no card, no watermark
Twenty credits is four 15 second stock clips, finished, vertical, with captions burned in and no watermark. You can post them.
The honest limit: 20 credits will not reach the AI footage mode, which is 25 credits for 15 seconds. The free tier covers stock footage, which for a lot of topics is what you would choose anyway, and it is enough to find out whether the output is something you would put your name on.
After that, $9.99 buys 100 credits with no subscription, and credits do not expire.
What a free tier is actually for
Not to get free videos forever. It is to answer one question: is the output good enough that I would publish it. A watermark, a resolution drop or a one minute cap all prevent you from answering that, which is usually the point of them.
The test worth running is the same in every tool. Take a real topic from your own content calendar, not a demo prompt, make one clip, and ask whether you would post it under your own name. That takes ten minutes and tells you more than any comparison article, including this one.
